Fakhrul slams Quader for ruling out possibility of dialogue
Criticising Awami League general secretary for his comments on ruling out of dialogue over next general election, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said holding talks is essential “for the sake of a credible and inclusive election” in the country.
“There’s no other way but to hold talks for restoration of true democracy and for holding a free, fair and inclusive election in the country. An acceptable and effective way will have to be found for a free and fair election through discussions with all political parties,” Fakhrul said.
He made the remarks while talking to reporters after placing wreaths at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave with leaders and activists of Jubo Dal, marking its 38th founding anniversary.
Earlier, talking to reporters after a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla at the secretariat, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader ruled out the possibility of holding dialogue with BNP over the next polls.
“There is no scope to hold political dialogue with BNP. It is BNP who has spoiled the atmosphere for holding talks,” Quader told reporters after a meeting with Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla at the secretariat.
Quader added: “Why there should be discussions with BNP? Did they [BNP] leave open the path of dialogue? It is BNP who had closed the path of dialogue,” Quader went on.
While his attention was drawn to Quader’s remarks, Fakhrul said, “Awami League general secretary is naturally very invigorated as he has just elected to the post. That’s why he made such comments.”
