Pallabi SI closed over custodial death

A sub-inspector, Jahidur Rahman Khan, was temporarily withdrawn from Pallabi Police Station in the capital yesterday over allegations of having beaten a youth to death on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner of Mirpur division Imtiaz Ahmed told The Daily Star.
Istiaq Ahmed Johnny, 28, a resident of Talab camp in Mirpur 11, was detained around 2:30am on Sunday for "assaulting a police informer". He was brought dead to Dhaka Medical College Hospital eight hours later. Police claimed that he died of chest pain.
DC Imtiaz said a three-member probe was formed to confirm the cause of Johnny's death. The report is due in 10 days.
Meanwhile, locals continued their street protest against Johnny's death.
