'Used as illegal route': Assam police probe culvert at India-Bangladesh border
While investigating an abduction case, India's Assam police have stumbled upon a culvert in Karimganj district -- which borders Bangladesh -- that might have been used as a secret and illegal route between the two countries.
Dilwar Hussain, a Karimganj resident, who was abducted last week, was taken to Bangladesh using the culvert, reports NDTV quoting Assam police sources.
Police are now investigating if the culvert is a regular route used by cross-border smugglers, traffickers and criminals.
Karimganj police received a kidnapping complaint last week from family members of Dilwar.
"A missing case was reported. We picked up a suspect called Alimuddin, following which Dilwar Hussain was rescued," said Jyoti Ranjan Nath, additional superintendent of Karimganj police.
During investigation of the case, "we took the accused and the victim to the area to find out how they sneaked into Bangladesh and came back, and discovered that a culvert connects the border areas under the fencing," he added.
"We found that people can easily sneak into India and vice-versa. We didn't find any BSF personnel there at that time," he also said.
The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of five lakh Indian rupees from Dilwar's family and asked them to hand over the amount to Alimuddin, police sources said. When Alimuddin was arrested, Dilwar was released without any ransom.
