‘Game Of Thrones’ filming locations will be opened to tourists

The show might be coming to an end, but fans of fantasy series Game Of Thrones will soon be able to step into Westeros. HBO will be converting several filming locations in Northern Ireland into tourist attractions.

Plans are underway for the Game Of Thrones Legacy attractions to include standing sets for iconic locations such as Winterfell, Castle Black and Kings Landing.

A tour will allow visitors a behind-the-camera glimpse of how the world’s biggest TV show was made. Each site will exhibit costumes, props, weapons, set decorations, art files, models, and other production materials.

Adding to this experience are state-of-the-art digital content and interactive materials which will showcase some the digital magic the series is known for.

HBO vice president (Licensing and Retail) Jeff Peters said the idea is to invite fans to visit Northern Ireland and “explore Westeros in person”.

“We look forward to opening the gates and sharing the excitement of stepping inside these amazing sets with Game Of Thrones fans from around the world,” he said.

Peters added that celebrating Northern Ireland’s culture, beauty and warmth is also a huge inspiration for the project.

Tourism NI chief executive John McGrillen said the project would be a “game changer” for Northern Ireland.

“While fans have seen the stunning landscapes, coastlines and mountains in the series, we are thrilled they will now have the opportunity to fully experience the charm of Northern Ireland and immerse themselves in to the world of Westeros,” he said.

A tentative targeted open date is currently set for 2019.
