O, A-level exams for Oct-Nov session to be held: British Council
The British Council has said that International GCSE, IGCSE, Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations for October-November 2020 session will be held as per schedule following approval from Bangladesh's Ministry of Education.
"In the upcoming October-November 2020 exams, UK exam boards will base results on students' performance in the exams alone and not on any non-exam assessment, with the exception of art and design qualifications," according to a statement issued by British Council Bangladesh.
The council said in the statement that it would "provide students across Bangladesh with a choice to take their exams from next month, especially after the global cancellation of the May-June 2020 exams."
"We have approximately 5,200 students in Bangladesh who registered with us in July-August 2020 to sit for their exams in the October-November 2020 series. We know how important it is for these young people to take their exams on time to enable them to stay on track with their future aspirations."
The statement said that the health and safety of the students remain British Council's top priority and all activities will be carried out in line with Bangladesh government's Covid-19 protocols, as well as prevention and control mechanisms outlined by World Health Organization (WHO).
"Our safeguarding protocols, including mandatory face coverings in exams, physical distancing of candidates, cleaning and sanitisation of the venues, will be applied in all exam venues across Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Narayanganj, and Khulna. With these rigorous operating processes in place, we feel confident in administering examinations in a safe and secure way during this challenging time," it said.
Earlier in the day, some English medium students sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's intervention to cancel the upcoming O and A-level examinations.
A group of students -- representing the candidates -- urged authorities concerned not to hold the exams in the October-November session in Bangladesh during the coronavirus pandemic as it will put them at severe health risk. The students made the call at a press conference arranged at Crime Reporters' Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) in the capital this noon.
