Nothing to worry about
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday said the killing of Sheikh Nurul Islam Faruqi and the triple murder at Moghbazar are "nothing serious" and asked citizens not to be worried.
"These [the murders] are isolated incidents. These may happen once in a while and there's nothing to worry about," he said while addressing a roundtable at Dhaka Reporters' Unity auditorium.
The roundtable, titled "Government's success in containing formalin and next steps", was organised by Amra Nagarbashi, a pro-Awami League citizens' platform.
Faruqi, anchor of religious programmes on Channel i and also a leader of Islamic Front Bangladesh, was slain in his residence at the capital's Purba Razabazar on Wednesday. The killing of three people at Sonalibagh area of Moghbazar took place the next day.
The minister said investigation is on and law enforcers are working on the motives for the murders. "We will publish the reports soon," he said, adding that Faruqi was killed by hired killers and a suspect was held yesterday in this connection.
"On the other hand, the triple murder in Moghbazar took place following a dispute over land grabbing. The murderers have been identified and will be arrested soon," said the state minister.
Dhaka University VC Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, AL leader Haji Mohammad Selim and leaders of the organisation also participated in the roundtable.
