Claims Mirza Abbas after deposition

BNP leader Mirza Abbas yesterday claimed that there had been no irregularity in the allocation of land for some journalists during his stint as housing and public works minister between 2001 and 2006.

“We issued DO (Demand Order) to housing authorities instructing them to make the allocation following rules concerned. They (housing authorities) will be responsible if any rule had been violated,” he added.

Abbas was talking to journalists after giving a statement to Jatan Kumar Roy, a deputy director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), in a case filed against Abbas' the then deputy Alamgir Kabir over the allocation.

ACC on March 6 field the case with Shahbagh Police Station in the capital accusing Alamgir and National Housing Authority's (NHA) former deputy director Azaharul Haque, office assistant Matiar Rahman and cashier Mansur Alam.

The seven acres of land in the capital's Mirpur was allotted to Dhaka Journalists Cooperatives Limited during the BNP-Jamaat government's tenure.

It was earlier allegedly allotted to a cooperative -- Jhilmil Samabay Samity -- whose president was the present shipping minister, Shajahan Khan.

Shajahan also appeared before Jatan at the ACC headquarters in the capital to give his statement. When he was leaving, Shahjahan told journalists that he was there as a witness. Jatan, through letters sent last month, had asked the duo to appear.

Abbas added that he had been unwell and was not adequately prepared to give the statement. He would provide some documents after a few days, a statement Jatan confirmed.

According to the case statement, Alamgir sent a letter to the then prime minister in 2002 requesting for building a housing area for journalists, writers, artists and cultural activists although they did not make any written request.

While the request was under process, Alamgir directed the housing and public works secretary to allocate the land which had already been assigned. The NHA officials allocated the land at Tk 3.39 crore although the market value was Tk 19 crore, it says.
