Youths need to be aware of climate change

Vice Chancellor of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Prof Aminul Haque Bhuyan yesterday said there should be coordinated efforts of all concerned to create mass awareness about the environmental degradation.
Particularly, the young generation needs to be properly aware of the environment and climate change issues to ensure the liveability of earth, he said.
Prof Haque was speaking as chief guest after distributing green cards among the winners of the Sylhet divisional level contest of "The Daily Star-HSBC Junior Climate Champions" at Scholarshome School and College in Sylhet city.
About 450 secondary level students of English and Bangla medium schools from across Sylhet division took part in the competition on environmental and climate change issues.

Under three categories--poster design/painting, quiz, and extempore speech, 30 qualified for the national round due on September 20 following the Dhaka and Chittagong rounds.
Praising the initiative for holding the event outside the capital, Prof Haque said such contests would help the next generation fight the challenges of the future.
Scholarshome Principal Brig Gen (retd) Zobayer Siddiqui, Manager (Corporate Sustainability) of HSBC Abdullah Al Jubayer, Managing Director of East Coast Group Tanjil Chowdhury, and SUST Assistant Professor Azizul Haque also spoke.
The large campus of Scholarshome in the city's Shahi Eidgah area wore a festive look with hundreds of school children who joined the daylong contest.
Prof Zohir-Bin Alam, head of the civil and environmental engineering department of SUST, led the seven-member panel of judges.
The joint initiative aims to create awareness among the youth about climate change and earth and to stimulate creativity and freedom of thinking in them.
