Before Ukraine, US should prioritise safe schools: Trump
Former US President Donald Trump has urged the Congress to prioritise school security over sending military aid to Ukraine.
Trump wondered how the US "had $40 billion to give to Ukraine" but cannot ensure school security while speaking at a National Rifle Association (NRA) conference in Houston, Texas.
According to the BBC, Trump remarked in his Friday (May 27, 2022) speech: "Before we nation-build the rest of the globe, we should be building safe schools for our own children in our own country."
The US Congress approved roughly $40 billion in military aid to Ukraine earlier this month. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, the US has sent $54 billion to the East European country.
Trump, on the other hand, denied calls for tighter gun laws, stating that Americans should be able to defend themselves against "evil" by carrying firearms, the BBC report says.
He advocated a "top-to-bottom overhaul" of school security, including metal detectors and at least one armed police officer on every campus. Democrats, he claimed, were avoiding such security procedures.
The NRA's annual convention, which boasts five million members, is taking place 450 kilometres from Uvalde, the site of the bloodiest school massacre in US in a decade.
