Vitiligo non-contagious curable disease
Vitiligo, a dermatological disease known as “shwety” in the country, is a non-communicable disease and it can be cured with proper treatment at the early stage of its occurrence, said physicians yesterday.
Contrary to popular belief, vitiligo does not result from curse or sin. Rather, it is a condition caused when the cells responsible for skin pigmentation are unable to function at certain sections of skin, they said.
They were speaking at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club in the capital. Vitiligo Foundation of Bangladesh (VFB) organised the event marking World Vitiligo Day.
VFB President Dr MU Kabir Chowdhury said vitiligo patients suffer from psychological distress only because of misconceptions about the disease.
VFB General Secretary Dr Morol Nazrul Islam said there are many superstitions regarding vitiligo. Girl patients suffer much humiliation due to the misconceptions.
