Villagers protest extortion

Hundreds of villagers of Aladatpur village under Narail municipality of the district brought out a procession yesterday demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to local extortionists.
They also formed a human chain at the village and held a rally. Speaking at the rally, Elias Sardar said he returned from Kuwait recently and bought a piece of land at Aladatpur village.
When he started to build a house there, a gang of criminals equipped with sharp weapons, came to his construction site and demanded one lakh taka as illegal toll.
"They forcibly took away Tk 20,000 from me and threatened to kill me in case I failed to give them rest 80 thousand taka in time," Elias said.
Another villager Nobir Hossain said that they protest this heinous criminal activities.
"When we file cases, police seem to remain indifferent," he said.
Rofiqul Islam, officer in-charge of Narail PS however said that drives were on to arrest the criminals.
