VICKY DONOR
Plot: A man is brought in by an infertility doctor to supply him with his sperm, where he becomes the biggest sperm donor for his clinic.
Review: Layers of plots unfold in Vicky Donor. Without giving away any spoiler; the movie takes various turns to a final one that takes us to a despairing irony. The first act takes us to the world of Vicky played by Ayushmann Khurrana (his debut film). It tries to make us like the character. I don't know if I like the character or not – may be because I have seen too many of those witty and street-smart loafer type heroes in Mumbai movies. His involvement of donating sperm for money is a twist. In serious movies buffs' term; it is a layer. It is not blood donation (it has become pretty old now), sperm for infertile couples to have children. I must say, sperm donation is a new term that Indian society has yet to accept. This bold move to introduce 'sperm' into the movie is something new and it deserves appreciation. The movie takes the usual turn of 'boy meets girl' with an 'iffy' situation. Again, I don't want to spoil what the 'iffy' is, but there is one, and it is another bold move for a South Asian audience to take. After a happy union, the movie takes another turn. This is where things get serious and the climax begins. The climax is a traditional one. The movie contains several plots with serious matters to deal with. The matters unfold like an onion, and it goes deeper where it tries to make you tear up.
The movie deserves credit for dealing with several serious issues like: sperm donation, inter-race marriage and infertility. The makers want the audience to accept situations that come in our face.
Unfortunately, it tries to be an out-of-the box story but is reluctant to come out of commercialism, which makes it just an above average movie. Ignoring the commercial part of the movie, the issues dealt in the movie is a recommended any movie lover.
