UP member assauted for protesting land grabbing

A union parishad  (UP) member was assaulted allegedly by a group of local AL men for protesting land grabbing in Hatibandha upazila on Monday.
Seriously injured, the UP member was first taken to Hatibandha upazila health complex and later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital at night.
He was Rafiqul Islam, 45, member of No. 9 ward of Barokhata union parishad.
Victim's family members said, a group of local ruling party men went to construct shops by grabbing a passenger shed at Milon Bazar on Lalmonirhat-Burimari road on Monday night.
When the local UP member protested it, the grabber gang attacked him.
The AL men were sent by Abu Bakkor Siddique, an influential AL leader, to grab the shed, alleged Barokhata UP chairman Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal.
"I submitted a written allegation regarding the matter to Hatibandha UNO at noon yesterday and UNO assured me of taking necessary steps," he said.
Hatibandha UNO Golam Sarowar said, he will take necessary action regarding the matter after investigating it properly as soon as possible.
However, Abu Bakkor Siddique said  that he was not aware about the matter.
"So question of my involvement in the land grabbing does not arise," he said.
