UP chairman suspended on graft charge
A union parishad chairman in Sadar upazila was temporarily suspended on Tuesday on various charges, including misappropriation of social safety net programme materials.
ASM Ehteshamul Islam, upazila nirbahi officer of Bagerhat Sadar upazila, said he received a letter suspending M Basharat Hawlader, chairman of Gotapara union parishad under the upazila, from the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.
He has already sent the letter to the union parishad concerned to take necessary steps in this regard.
According to the letter, chairman Basharat was temporarily suspended on different charges including misappropriation of rice, wheat and other materials meant for distribution among distressed people under the social safety net programmes, VGD (Vulnerable Group Development) and VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding).
The letter also accuses Basharat of attacking local freedom fighters, opposing the 1971 Liberation War and showing his age less than the real in governmental documents.
Basharat, however, refuting the charges, said a local vested quarter, being jealous of his good position, was trying to tarnish his image as he became vice-president of the upazila unit BNP and president of the union unit of the party and also elected chairman by defeating a ruling party backed candidate in the last polls.
He said he would file a writ petition with the High Court soon against the order of the ministry.
