Torture in brutal manner
A woman was tortured brutally on charge of stealing money in Mostafapur union of the district on Monday.
The victim was identified as Shahana Begum, 35, a tenant of one Abu Howlader of Zayar village and wife of Sagar Howlader.
Police and locals said Tk 10,000 was stolen from the house of Abu, a paralysed patient, on June 13.
To find out the thief, everyone at the house including Shahana was given chalpora (blessed rice) by Abu's nephew Ferdous Howlader on Sunday. Earlier, the rice was brought from a local religious person in the nearby village.
Abu's family accused Shahana of stealing the money when the rice in her mouth 'thickened' after chewing it.
The following morning, she was tied with the help of a chain to a tree at Abu's courtyard for the money. When her husband Sagar went to collect the money, Ferdous and other villagers beat up Shahana mercilessly.
On information, police rescued the victim from the spot and arrested Abu's wife Safia Begum and son Shohag Howlader, 30.
However, Ferdous managed to flee, sensing the presence of the law enforcers, said officer in-charge Muhammad Moniruzzaman.
