Tk 5,300 RMG minimum wage from Dec

Labour and Employment Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju today formally announced Tk 5,300 as the minimum salary for garment workers.
“The new wage structure will come into effect from December 1,” the minister said after announcing the new wage at a meeting with BGMEA leaders at the Secretariat.
The announcement came a day after garment owners agreed to pay a minimum monthly salary of Tk 5,300 to garment workers, as recommended by the wage board.
The workers will get five percent increment over basic salary each year, the minister said.
On November 4, a split board, formed to finalise salary for the RMG workers, voted and finalised its recommendation that Tk 5,300 should be the minimum salary for workers.
Factory owners, who are board members, however, rejected the proposed 76.66 percent minimum salary hike from the existing Tk 3,000.
But the business leaders accepted the board’s recommendation after a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Gono Bhaban last night.
