Three sisters take poison, one dies
Three sisters of a family at Bonogram union in Rangunia upazila here attempted to commit suicide by taking poison in the early hours yesterday in which one died immediately.
The deceased is 13-year-old Tanju, the youngest sister.
The two other sisters -- Yeasmin, 18, and Tanmin, 15 -- were admitted to Chandroghona Mission Hospital, and Chittagong Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
Manjur Morshed, officer-in-charge of Rangunia Police Station, said the trio had decided to commit suicide by taking poison around 3:30am as their sister-in-law, brother's wife, had been torturing them.
Quoting the neighbours, the OC said the sisters had been living in their brothers' care at Bonogram village in the union as their parents died a few years ago.
Two of the three brothers are expatriates in Oman.
One of them named Osman got married and his wife Mamtaz used to torture the three sisters physically and mentally, the OC added.
The trio decided to commit suicide for avoiding torture, he said, adding that Mamtaz was arrested from Chittagong Medical College Hospital area around 4:30pm yesterday.
The two sisters were reported to be unconscious till filing of the report around 6:30pm.
Morshed added that the police were investigating into the matter.
