The Best Babysitter (hint: not me)
As I looked at her rosy cheeks and innocently carved beautiful face, deep down I felt like I was being engulfed by a somewhat bittersweet envy. I had all the numbers, from the hospital to the police, but yet I felt petrified at the mere thought of looking after the angel who lay peacefully sound asleep in her little cradle. I calmly reassured myself that nothing would go wrong but I was actually behind the curtains of delusion.
Minutes after her mother left she started shifting from one side of the crib to the other. I decided not to disturb her so I went to another room and started playing the classic bounce tales on my ancient cell phone. Suddenly I heard her howling. To be very honest, I was frightened. I ran as fast as possible to her room. I saw her scared face scanning the room for her mother but I was the only one there. I balanced her on my hips, held her on her back and slowly patted her while walking around, but her howling didn't stop. I thought of feeding her, so I put her back in the cradle and put the milk on the stove to boil. Meanwhile I took a little banana to her and slowly put the tiny pieces in her petite mouth. She seemed to be calm for a while but then like a tiger out of a cage, she started screaming again. I kept patting her gently but then I smelt an odour. I rushed to the kitchen where the milk had been boiling for about 15 minutes! It had boiled over the rusted pot around the stove and the fire caused it to burn. I took the pot off the stove and started wiping the mess.
Then I heard the demonic cry of the angel who had vomited the half-eaten banana all over her mother's brand new carpet. I looked at the poor carpet and felt sorry for it because I knew I was not cleaning that. I changed her clothes, took her out of her room and switched on the television; and that was it! She was mesmerised! She had stopped crying and in fact was dancing to the tunes that were being played. If only I had thought of that before the chaos and confusion. Philo Farnsworth's invention really saved me for the next hour or so till her mother, my aunt, came home to me and her daughter sleeping on the couch in front of the television.
