Why animals have rights
Date: Tuesday, 20 August
Time: 2pm
Venue: Room #415, 3rd floor, Department of Anthropology, Jagannath University
Rainer Ebert, renowned animal rights activist, will be speaking at a public talk on the philosophy of animal rights at the Jagannath University. In the talk, Rainer will reject the traditional view that animals exist to serve human purposes, and explain why discrimination on the basis of species is as unjustified as discrimination on the basis of race, sex, or other morally irrelevant characteristics. He will then argue that some non-humans have moral rights, just like we do. Finally, Rainer will explore the consequences of this view, which are nothing short of radical.
One of these consequences is that we ought to be vegans. Not only should we not buy and eat meat, eggs or dairy, but we should also not purchase leather goods or other animal-based products for which there are readily available plant-based alternatives.
Rainer is a PhD. student of philosophy at Rice University, a founding member of the Bangladesh Liberal Forum, and an Associate Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics. For more information log onto rainerebert.com
