Criminals torched a Hindu temple after damaging three idols in it in Morelganj upazila of the district early yesterday.
A gang broke into the Sarbojanin Durga Temple at Herma Bazar under Teligati union anytime after midnight and damaged the idols of Hindu god Ganesh and goddesses Laksmi and Saraswati, said Khandakar Rafikul Islam, superintendent of police (SP) in Bagerhat.
The criminals left the scene after setting straws in the temple on fire, the SP said, adding that police were trying to arrest the culprits.
Gopal Ghosh, president of Sarbojanin Durga Temple, said he informed the law enforcers after a devotee saw the matter early in the morning.
Local parliamentary member Dr Mozammel Hossain and SP Khandakar Rafikul Islam visited the spot, he said.
Earlier the criminals vandalised several idols at Gopalpur Sarbojanin Temple on February 28, Dumuria Sarbojanin Temple on March 1 and North Gapalpur Temple on March 19 in the same upazila.
