Supplementary Classroom Teaching Software
In 2013, the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) has introduced new curriculum and textbooks for all classes and subjects. Save the Children has developed a supplementary classroom teaching learning tool on the new English textbook of Class four. The new English curriculum based on the 2010 National Education Policy of Bangladesh also strongly suggests the availability and use of audio-visual materials in the classrooms. To supplement the government, Save the Children, as a pilot initiative, developed this supplementary classroom teaching learning aid and covered all 26 lessons of new textbook of class four.
The opportunities of listening and speaking in English, which is vital for learning languages, are sometimes limited for the students in the classrooms. The audio-visual material of Save the Children is designed in such a way so that teachers could get new pedagogical skills by integrating four language skills using interactive tasks such as, group or pair works, chain drills etc. The contents have been introduced through various activities, games and animation to make learning joyful. Importance has been provided on the presentations of English sound, stress and intonation patterns along with conversations.
The teacher's section will be shown on the laptop and the students' section on the projector. The contents in both the screens will be the same, with the only exception that the teacher will have the teacher's note to guide him/her in the classroom. The software has self-learning option for students as well.
This material is the first edition and Save the Children will continue editing and modifying the software based on the feedback from classroom practices. However, it is hoped that this supplementary classroom teaching--learning material will add a new dimension and model in teaching English at primary schools.
