Stray violence marked the second and final day of Jamaat-e-Islami-enforced hartal (shutdown) Wednesday as pro-hartal activists clashed with law enforcers in different parts of the country.
Jamaat supporters put up blockades on several roads throughout the country, and blasted 21 cocktails at police, according to our correspondents.
Law enforcers picked up a Jamaat activist in Gazipur and 15 others in Satkhira in connection with picketing and violence during hartal hours.
GAZIPUR
Jamaat activists brought out a procession in support of hartal at around 10:00am from Hosen Market area in Tongi.
As police tried to chase them away, they hurled two cocktails at the law enforcers.
Police picked up Khorshed Alam, a Jamaat activist from the spot, Abul Kalam Azad, officer in-charge of Tongi Police Station told The Daily Star.
RAJSHAHI
Around 10-15 pickets blockaded the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway by torching bamboo fence and wooden chairs on the street.
On information, police dispersed the activists by fired four to five blank shots.
In retaliation, the activists blasted four cocktails while fleeing the seen, reports our correspondent quoting witnesses.
SATKHIRA
Pro-hartal activists blockaded roads by felling trees at Kadamtola and Bakal areas of the city.
They also blasted 15 cocktails in Kadamtola and Narkeltola of the city from brisk processions.
Police picked up eight Jamaat-Shibir activists from different parts of the district in connection with picketing and violence, reports our correspondent quoting Joydeb Chowdhury, additional police super of Satkhira district.
COMILLA
At least 18 people were injured as activists of Awami League and Jamaat-Shibir clashed at Fayazganj area of Sadar (South) upazila of the city.
Of them, two severely injured were whisked off to nearby hospital, reports our correspondent quoting Aynul Haq, officer in-charge of Sadar (South) Police Station.
The clash began around 9:30am as AL supporters blocked a Jamaat-Shibir procession on Fayazganj road.
Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to keep the situation under control, the OC added.
