Storms hit 3 districts, injure 60, damage over 300 houses
At least 60 people were injured and over 300 thatched houses, schools and shops damaged as violent storms swept over Meherpur, Dinajpur and Chapainawabganj districts yesterday and the day before.
At least 25 people were injured and over 100 houses damaged as a tornado swept over two villages in Sadar upazila of Meherpur early yesterday, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
District administration sources said, the tornado hit Chandbil and Jhaubaria villages of Amjhupi union around 2:00am and lasted for a few minutes.
Among the injured, ten were residents of Chandbil and 9 rushed to Meherpur General Hospital.
The tornado uprooted a large number of trees and electric poles halting traffic movement on the Meherpur-Chuadanga Highway for about four hours.
Later, traffic returned to normalcy as fire brigades removed the uprooted trees from the highway.
The storm also damaged crops on vast areas of the two villages.
In Dinajpur, at least 20 people were injured and around 100 houses and shops damaged as a tornado lashed a village in Parbatipur upazila yesterday, reports our correspondent.
According to the locals, the storm hit Kanelbazaar under the upazila at about 4:00pm.
The tornado accompanied with rain lasted for about three minutes also damaged trees and shops at the village.
In Chapanawabganj, at least 15 were injured and over 100 thatched houses damaged as a storm lashed several villages in three upazilas on Sunday evening.
The storm hit 12 villages in Nachole, Gomostapur and Bholahat upazilas at about 7:30pm and lasted only a few minutes, said administration sources.
Ziaur Rahman, lawmaker of Chapainawabganj-2 constituency and locals said, over 100 houses were destroyed, standing crops and vegetables damaged and a huge number of trees uprooted by the storm in three upazilas.
At least 15 people were injured during the storm in Nachole upazila. A primary school and Bangabari BGB camp of Bholahat upazila were also damaged.
Abul Kalam Azad, deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension, said at least 27 hectares of mango orchard were damaged by the storm in Gomostapur and Bholahat upazilas.
