Bale wondergoal not nominated by UEFA
Cristiano Ronaldo is leading the line for the UEFA Goal of the Season prize as his unbelievable overhead kick for former club Real Madrid against current team Juventus in the Champions League semifinal made the cut. However, an equally impressive overhead kick from then teammate Gareth Bale against Liverpool in the final of Europe's elite tournament has been left out.
The reason for this being that only one goal from each UEFA competition is nominated and the panel felt that Ronaldo's wondergoal just edged out Bale's.
Adding the popularity of the Portuguese to his sensational goal, it seems all but certain that he will take home the prize, but there are 10 other nominees to contend with.
Dimitri Payet provides the Europa League nomination, the France international producing a brilliant dribble and finish in Marseille's win against RB Leipzig.
Ronaldo's countrymen Goncalo Ramos, Paulo Estrela and Ricardinho are also on the shortlist, along with Denmark playmaker Christian Eriksen.
Supporters can watch all the goals and vote for their favourite on the UEFA website. The award was won by Mario Mandzukic last year, while Lionel Messi claimed the honour in both 2015 and 2016.
