Sohel to be questioned further

CID police will hold Sohel, a suspect in the Nikunja Bihari Debnath murder case, for at least two more days, according to official sources.

Sohel was taken into custody on the basis of Shukur Ali's judicial statement, which suggested Ali and eight others were involved in the killing.

Debnath, 55 joint secretary of the ministry of LGRD, was stabbed to death by muggers near the Struggle for Independence sculpture at the intersection of S.M. and Jagannath Hall on the morning of January 11.

The CID took over the case from the Ramna Police on January 16 after the thana force became embroiled in controversy.

Ramna police are alleged to have arrested over 100 suspects in the case, only to release them after accepting bribes.

Ramna Police are also alleged to have forced Shukur Ali to make a confessional statement in the case.

In other developments, the search continued for the knife used in the killing. Investigators are combing the areas near the site of the killing without success.
