15 hurt in AL infighting

At least 15 people were injured in a clash between the activists of Awami League and Krishak League at Badamtala Bazar in Sadar upazila yesterday. Of the injured, Anwar Hossain, Nasir Uddin,  Rezaul Islam, Shamsul Alam, Jalil Mollah, Siddique Hossain, Naser Ali and Ruhul Amin and Akter Hossain were rushed to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital while the rest given first aid. Sub-inspector, in-charge of Gobinda Adhikary Hatgopalpur police outpost, said there was a longstanding conflict between Harisankarpur union unit AL secretary Sanar Uddin and the union unit Krishak League president Jahangir Hossain over taking control of a local weekly market. As a sequel to the conflict, the supporters of Sanar and Jahangir attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving at least 15 from both sides injured following an altercation over the issue yesterday afternoon, said the SI.

Two kids drown

Two kids drowned in a pond in Kalapara upazila town on Tuesday noon. They were identified as Rubaiyat, 5, son of Jalal Jomaddar of Bainbunia village and his cousin Raihan, 4, son of Kawsar Pada of the area.  Family sources said, the duo while playing fell in a pond beside their house. Later, the bodies were recovered from the pond. Meanwhile, police recovered the body of a schoolboy from Dumki upazila on Tuesday evening. The deceased was identified as Robiul Islam, 13, son of Naser Fakir of Chargorabdi village.

Jamaat leader held

Police arrested a local Jamaat leader in Ullapara upazila town of Sirajganj district yesterday on charge of attacking police during hartal on June 10 this year. The arrestee is Md Abu Muttalib, 40, son of Abu Sama of Islampur village and ameer of Durganagar union unit Jamaat. On secret information, police arrested Muttalib from the area at 12:30pm, said officer in-charge of Ullapara police station Md Habibul Islam.

Five robbers jailed

A   court here on Tuesday sentenced five people to 17 years imprisonment each for committing robbery. The convicts are Nazrul Islam, 35, son of Khoki Mondal of Joyrampur village, Naharul Islam, 40, son of Shamshuddin of Poranpur village, Tofajjel, 43, son of Inuddin of Poranpur, Shohidul, 38, son of Darshona Belepara and Firoz Ali, 45, son of Mongal Ali of Kukiya Chadpur village in Damurhuda upazila. The court also fined them Tk 20,000, in default, to suffer two years more in jail. Nazir Ahammad, additional district and session judge, handed down the verdict in presence of Tojajjel and shohidul in the crowded court. According to the prosecution, on November, 2003, the convicts looted cash, gold ornaments and other valuables from the house of one Mojibar Rahman of Poranpur village.  Later, a case was filed against 12 people with Damurhuda police station in connection with the robbery.
