Boy murdered

A school student was killed at Durgapur village in Mirpur upazila on Sunday night. The dead was identified as Azadul Islam, 10, son of Abdullah of the village. Azadul was a student of class III at Sorutia Government Primary School in the area. Motiar Rahman, officer in-charge (OC) of Mirpur police station said Azadul went out of his home at about 4.30pm on Sunday to go to a playground, a few hundred yards away. Family members searched for him at different places as he did not return home in the evening. At about 11:30pm, locals found Azadul's body in a roadside ditch at the village. He was strangled, police said.

Marriage registrar jailed

A marriage registrar was jailed and his assistant and mother of a girl were fined on Sunday for solemnising marriage of an underage girl in Ghatail upazila. Upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) in Ghatail and executive magistrate Mohammad Kamal Hossain took the legal action for the offence. Sources said, marriage of a ten-year-old girl, daughter of an expatriate and a class IV student, was held with Altab Ali, 25, son of Haider Ali of Khgrata village in the upazila on Saturday. Local union parishad (UP) chairman requested the mother of the girl not to hold the early marriage. As she turned down the request, the UNO sentenced the marriage registrar Abdul Jalil Tarafder to 10 days imprisonment and fined his assistant Abdul Karim and the mother of the girl Tk 1000 each for the offence.

Boy kills step-mother

A teenage boy allegedly killed his step-mother at Haldarpara village in Sadar upazila yesterday afternoon. Police later arrested Mohammad Suruj, 18, on charge of killing Minara Begum, 40, wife of Shah Alam of the village under Baroghoria union. Bazlur Rashid, officer in-charge (OC) of Sadar police station said, Suruj's mother Joly Begum and Minara locked in a quarrel over a family matter. At a stage, Suruj hit Minara indiscriminately with a wooden rod, resulting in her death on the spot.

Four 'Hefajat' boys arrested

Police arrested four teenage boys while putting up posters of Hefajat-e-Islam at Barkatpur intersection in Bhuapur upazila early yesterday. The arrestees are Imrul Hasan Oli, 15, son of Maulana Wares Ali, Rezaul Karim, 14, son of Alam Akanda and Tanvir Ahmed, 15, son of Abdul Mannan of Govindasi village  and Nahid Hasan, 16, son of Majnu Mia of Jadurgati village. Of them, three are students of a local madrasa while the other studies at a local high school. Hares Ali Miah, officer in-charge at Bhuapur police station, said a team arrested the four along with the posters. However, Abdur Rahman, member secretary of district unit Hefajat-e-Islam, said the posters did not belong to his party.

Schoolgirl rescued

A schoolgirl, who was kidnapped from Sonagazi upazila of the district two days ago, was rescued in Bandarban district yesterday. Police also arrested Abu Baker Siddique alias Sagar, 20, from Langipara area of the municipality on charge of abduction. Police said, they rescued the 13-year-old class VII student of Sonagazi Saber Mohammad Pilot High School with the help of locals and also held Bibi Kawser, mother to Sagar and microbus driver Jahangir Alam during the drive.
