Youth crushed under train

A youth was crushed under a running train at Dewanganj railway station in the district yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Murad Ali, 26, son of Lal Chan of village Muradabad under Islampur upazila. Jamalpur railway police sources said, Murad was trying to get into a Mymensingh bound local train. He slipped down and went under the wheels of the train at around 9.00am. He died on the spot.
Indian citizen held

An Indian citizen was arrested at Mangalkata Bazar in Sadar upazila of the district on Tuesday for entering Bangladesh territory illegally by crossing border. The arrestee, identified as M Mozammel Ali, son of Raif Uddin, hails from Burundanga village in Cachar district under Indian state of Assam. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police sources said Mozammel illegally entered Bangladesh territory through Tekerghat LC border point in Tahirpur upazila on May 25 and was trying to hire coal workers of the country from Mangalkata Bazar. At one stage, coal workers caught him and brought him to local BGB camp at about 12.00pm.
Man jailed for rape attempt

A mobile court sentenced a man to jail for one month for attempt to rape a minor girl in Bakshiganj upazila of the district yesterday noon. The convict was identified as Ifran Ali, 55, at Tinanipara area in the upazila town. Police said, Ifran took the 12-year-old girl of the same area to a jute field near his house by offering her a candy and attempted to violate her on Tuesday evening. Hearing the screams of the girl, neighbours rushed to the spot and rescued her. Debashish Nag, executive magistrate, also the upazila nirbahi officer, handed down the punishment.
Shopkeeper stabbed

A gang of criminals set fire to a shop at municipal super market in the district town yesterday noon. They also stabbed the shopkeeper, Mohammad Yusuf, 20, leaving him seriously injured. Locals said, a gang numbering 4 to 5 entered Siam Shoes of the market in old bus stand area and stabbed the shopkeeper at 1:30pm. They left the place after setting the shop on fire. Being informed, Fire Service men rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. The incident was a sequel to a previous enmity, police said.
