Abducted boy found dead

Body of a high school boy was recovered from a cornfield here in Nawabganj upazila yesterday afternoon two days after of his abduction. Mridul Hasan, 13, was son of Nazrul Islam of Baragharia village under Mithapukur in Rangpur. Police said criminals murdered the boy anytime yesterday and left the body there. Mridul, a class eight student at Kusdah High School in Nawabganj upazila, was abducted on Thursday when he went for visit Shapnapuri park in the upazila.
Cheats beaten up

A mob beat up two cheats at village Purbo Sindurna of Hatibandha upazila yesterday and handed them over to police. The arrestees are Shahjahan Miah, 42, son of Kobad Ali and Babu Islam, 33, son of Mosur Ali, of Bitantari in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha district. They tried to cheat Kusum Begum, 30, wife of Sona Miah at Sindurna village who was longing for a baby for the last ten years of her marriage saying. The two told her that her dream will come true if she paid Tk 30 thousand for it. The woman gave them the amount but to no effect. When the two cheats came again on Friday night for more Tk 20 thousand, locals caught them and gave them a good beating.
Bid to rape minor girl

An eleven-year-old autistic girl was traumatised allegedly after a boy attempted to violate her in Jigatola area of the town on Friday afternoon. At around 3:00pm, Swadhin alias Babu, 15, of the same area took the girl to an under-construction building and tried to violate her, police quoted the victim's family as saying. A local youth said he saw them in the building. He chased Babu but Babu managed to escape. The victim has been admitted to a local hospital for being traumatised due to the rape-attempt. Her father yesterday filed a case with Sadar police station in this connection.
Smuggled saris, clothes seized

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized Indian saris and three-pieces worth Tk 1 crore from Tangrali village near Benapole Port yesterday morning. 26 BGB Battalion Commander Lt Col Abul Kalam Azad told this correspondent that on a tip-off, a team of BGB members raided the village at about 6:00am and seized 17 bales of saris and three pieces in an abandoned condition. The smugglers managed to flee the scene, sensing the presence of the BGB team.
Shibir activist held
Unb, Gopalganj
Police arrested a suspected activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir at Miapara in the town on Friday afternoon. The law enforcers also recovered some jihadi (religious uprising) books, leaflets, posters, bomb making materials and a few other objects and documents from the possession of the arrestee identified as Abul Hayat, 22, son of Abdus Salam of Tebaria village in Sadar upazila. Police said acting on secret information, a team of police conducted a raid on the rented house of Abul Hayat and arrested him.
Eight houses gutted

A devastating fire gutted 8 houses at Bharuimari village in Ishwardi upazila of the district on Friday afternoon. Four cows and 14 goats died in the fire. Fire fighters and locals said that the fire originated at Razzak Hossain's house at about 5:30pm and spread to adjacent seven other houses. The fire caused damages to properties worth Tk 10 lakh, claimed the affected villagers.
Theft at temple

A theft took place at Radha Gobintha Mondir, a Hindu temple, at Labubunia in Kathalia upazila on Friday night. Madon Mohon Shil, caretaker of the temple said that the thieves entered the temple breaking open the door at night and took away several metal-made articles. A case was filed with Kathalia police station in connection with the incident. Visiting the place, additional superintendent of police Md. Mohidul Islam said they will investigate the matter and take necessary action soon.
8 hurt in AL infighting
Unb, Shariatpur
At least eight people were injured, two of them by bullet-hit, in a clash between two rival groups of Awami League (AL) at Sujandoyel village in Sadar upazila yesterday. The two bullet-hit were identified as Didar Shikdar, 40, and Shahjahan Madbar, 38. Police said supporters of two AL leaders, Khalil Matbar and Romij Khan, were locked into the clash at about 3:00pm. The rival groups also traded gunfire during the clash, locals said.
