AL leader stabbed

Criminals attacked and seriously injured a local Awami League leader by stabbing him in Khadim Bypass area on the Sylhet-Tamabil road on Sunday. The injured was identified as Oliur Rahman, vice-president of the Kanaighat upazila unit of AL and resident of Narayanpur village under Gachhbari union of the upazila. Witnesses said a gang swooped on Oliur at 2.00pm while he was going to Sylhet town from Kanaighat along with his cousin Mostak Ahmed riding a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. They stabbed him indiscriminately leaving him severely injured and left the scene.
Woman killed by son

A woman was killed allegedly by her son at Narendrapur village in Kachua upazila on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Shahida Begum, 55, wife of Fazlur Rahman of the village. Locals said Shahida and her son Obaidul Islam Uzzal, 35, locked in an altercation when she refused to give money to her son on Sunday morning. At one stage, Uzzal hit her mother with a spade, leaving her injured. Critically injured Shahida later died at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) at night.
Youth gets life for rape

A court here gave life term rigorous imprisonment to a youth in a rape case. Additional judge of District and Sessions Judge Court Mafizur Rahman Bhuiyan handed down the verdict to Rafiqul Islam, 30, son of Keramat Ali of Baghia village of Manikganj Sadar upazila, for violating a minor girl in 2001. The court also fined him Tk.20, 000, in default to suffer six months more RI.
Potter murdered

A man was stabbed to death at Paul Para at Shekhercola village in Sadar upazila on Sunday night. The deceased was Romen Chandra Paul, 28, son of Hiren Chandra Paul, of the village and a potter by profession. Family members found Romen lying with his throat slit at around 11:00pm at a eucalyptus garden, around 200 meters away from his residence and informed the police.
Body exhumed

Body of a school teacher was exhumed from the grave at village Damodarpur under Sarishabari upazila of the district on Monday noon. The dead, Momena Khatun, 35, wife of Muslem Uddin of the village, was an assistant teacher of Dakkhin Damodarpur Govt. Primary School. Police said Momena's in-laws claimed she died of lightning.As the body was buried on that day on May 4 hurriedly, the incident roused a doubt among the family members of Momena and the locals. Mukaddes Ali, father of the dead, later filed a murder case against five persons. The court took the case into cognisance and passed an order to investigate the matter and exhume the body from the grave and send it to Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
