Six-storey building tilts in Gendaria
A six-storey residential building in Dayaganj under Gendaria Police Station of the capital slowly tilted on another adjoining building prompting the authorities to evacuate five families and order its demolition yesterday.
A Rajuk team led by Executive Magistrate Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan and Authorised Officer Aminul Islam Sumon rushed to the scene and evacuated the residents including the building owner Shahidul Islam.
“After evacuation, we sealed off the building at 8:00pm last night,” said Sumon. “We ordered the owner to immediately demolish the building.”
The owner is supposed to embark on demolition by this morning.
Sumon said that though the owner claimed to have approval from Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) for the building, he could not produce it readily. According to the owner, it is a ten-year-old building, he said.
Sumon said the adjoining building had no danger, and evacuation was not necessary.
Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Gendaria Police Station, said the building tilted slowly over time, and the locals informed the police of the incident yesterday afternoon. They called in Rajuk officials after visiting the site, he said.
Earlier, a three-storey residential building in Demra on the capital's outskirts tilted on an adjoining six-storey building on June 3. It was demolished soon afterwards.
