Shibir men attack cops in Rajshahi again

At least four policemen were injured, one critically, and a firearms and a walky-talky were snatched from them when Islami Chhatra Shibir men clashed with law enforcers in Rajshahi city Monday morning.
One of the injured, Jahangir Alam, in-charge of Upashahar police camp, sustained critical injuries as Shibir men thrashed his head with bricks and hurled homemade bombs, said SM Moniruzzaman, commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP).
The 30-minute clash ensued around 10:30am when Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, brought out a procession from Shalbagan area and faced police resistance.
More than 300 Shibir men divided into two groups carried out the attack on police, leaving the four injured, said the RMP commissioner.
The three other injured constables are: Shafiqul Islam, Latifur Haider and Jakir Hossain. All the injured are the members of riot police.
At first, a group of Shibir men brought out a procession and took position on Rajshahi-Naogaon highway.
As police tried to resist them, they caught Jahangir and beat him indiscriminately taking off his helmet, the police official added.
At one stage, Jahangir fall down on the highway and the Shibir men thrashed his head with bricks, he said.
The Shibir men also blasted several homemade bombs during the incident, the police official said.
Jahangir sustained severe injuries during the incident.
During the clash, the Shibir men also snatched a firearms and a walky-talky from the law enforcers, the police official added.
As police fired over one hundred rubber bullets and fired from shotguns, the Shibir men fled the scene.
The law enforcers also lobbed several teargas shells to disperse the marauding Shibir men.
Later, another group came following the path of their predecessors and clashed with police.
Three other policemen also injured during the clashes.
All the victims were rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
The condition of Jahangir was stated to be critical, said Dr Roksana Parveen, emergency division doctor of the hospital.
He was taken to the surgery ward, said Dr Roksana.
