Rony challenges legality of probe report
Ruling party lawmaker Golam Maula Rony Wednesday submitted no-confidence petition with a Dhaka court challenging legality of a probe report filed by police in connection with a case for attacking and threatening him to death.
Rony filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station against two Independent TV journalists — reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul — and its owner Salman F Rahman on July 20 on charges of attacking him, giving death threat and trying to extort money from him.
Rony, Patuakhali-3 constituency member of parliament, allegedly beat up the two journalists of the television at his Topkhana Road office in the capital the same day.
On July 30, Md Abu Zafar, sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station, submitted the investigation report before the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Dhaka clearing the two reporters and Rahman of the charges as police did not find any evidence in support of Rony's allegation.
Zafar, also the investigation officer of the case, appealed to the court on that day to take legal action against the ruling MP for filing the false case against the trio.
Rony in his petition filed on Wednesday claimed that the IO did not inform him about the probe report before submitting it to the court.
The IO also did not interrogate the people who witnessed the incident on July 20, the petition added.
After holding the hearing on Wednesday, Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor fixed November 28 for further hearing on the petition.
Rony was present before the court during the Wednesday's hearing.
Police on July 24 arrested Rony in connection with a case filed by Independent TV for assaulting Momin and Mukul.
Rony was sent to jail a day after his arrest for beating up the two journalists.
