RMG workers block city road
The TV grab shows agitating workers of Uta Fashion staging demonstration on Gulshan link road in the capital Monday morning.
Hundreds of workers of a readymade garment factory blocked the Gulshan link road of the capital protesting the sudden closure of their factory Monday morning.
The agitating workers of Uta Fashion also vandalised window panes of several nearby factories in the area, said Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Industrial Police.
The peak hour blockade instantly caused severe traffic jam in the vicinity.
Agitated workers started the demonstration at around 8:00am after the authorities closed the factory without any prior notice.
Later, a large number of workers of some other factories joined the aggrieved workers in front of the Uta gate.
The angry workers then attacked nearby factories and hurled brickbats, breaking windowpanes.
On information, police rushed to the spot and tried to disperse them, Moniruzzaman said.
Law enforcers also charged baton to bring the situation under control, the police official said.
As the workers hurled brick chips, the police fired around 30 rounds of rubber bullets, Biplob Kumar Sarker, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon division, told The Daily Star.
