Rapist jailed for 14 yrs, another escapes from police custody
A man was sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment for violating a girl in Jessore district on Tuesday while an arrestee, accused in a rape case, escaped from police custody in Barisal yesterday.
In Jessore, a court here on Tuesday sentenced a man to 14 years' imprisonment for raping a girl, reports UNB.
The court also fined the convict, Saban Ali Sardar, son of Chand Ali
Sardar of Hajrakati village in Keshobpur upazila, Tk 5,000, in default, he is to suffer another year in jail.
According to the prosecution, Saban Ali was in love with the girl of Barondali village.
On June 29, 2004, he took her to nearby Saroskati village to show her dredging machine there.
In the evening, Saban Ali, aided by one Abdul Quader Sardar, raped the girl in a paddy field at the village.
Hearing scream, villagers rushed to the spot, caught Saban Ali and handed him over to the police. His accomplice Quader managed to flee.
Later, the girl filed a case with Jessore Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, accusing Saban and Quader who was exonerated from rape charge.
After examining all evidence and witnesses, Judge SM Abdus Salam of the tribunal, pronounced the verdict against Saban Ali in absentia.
The court also issued an arrest warrant against him.
Away in Barisal, an arrested man, accused in a rape case, escaped from police custody after injuring two policemen at Rathkhola in Agoiljhara upazila yesterday, reports our correspondent.
The injured are Sub-Inspector Akkas Ali and Constable Md Tuhin of Agoiljhara Police Station.
Of them, Akkas was admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital while Tuhin to the upazila health complex.
Police Superintendent AKM Ehsan Ullah said SI Akkas and Constable Tuhin yesterday noon arrested Sohag Gazi, son of Motaleb Gazi, from Baroitala village in a rape case filed with the police station on November 22 last year.
When the policemen were going back to the PS with the arrestee in their motorbike, he jumped off the vehicle and fled the scene after pushing the duo to the ground in Rathkhola area. The SI and constable sustained injuries during the incident.
Police are raiding different areas to arrest Sohag. A case was filed in this connection, said the SP.
