'Proper implementation of laws can stop violence against women'
The existing laws of the land can amply protect the rights of women if implemented properly through creating social awareness.
This was the crux of the message conveyed yesterday by the speakers at an appraisal meeting for the Ansar and VDP officials on 'the national plan of action for women development.'
Held at the headquarters of Ansar and VDP, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Joint Secretary to the Home Ministry Amirul Islam, Deputy Secretary to the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs Abu Solaiman Chowdhury and representatives of CIDA Gillcarr Harris with director general of Ansar and VDP Major General Khandakar Md Nurunnabi in the chair.
Referring to various oppressive acts against women, the top brass of Ansar and VDP said that awareness should be created among the womenfolk prior to other sections of the society for upholding their rights.
He said violence against women can be stopped through empowering and creating leadership among them.
"If we want to uphold the rights of women, we well have to create enormous opportunities for them to be self-reliant," he said, adding that his organisation was playing an effective role in this regard.
Describing the organisation as the largest community-based organisation of the government, General Nurunnabi said different vocational trainings were given to women members of the Ansar and VDP despite resource constraints.
Later, an working session was held at the same venue which was addressed by Farzana Naim, Krisna Chand, Jesmin and Khair Jahan Sogra.
Farzana Naim said that all the core ministries of the government as well as the civil society have to play a vital role for upholding rights of women.
"Not only the Women and Children Affairs Ministry but also the other ministries have to work in a coordinated way for the development of womenfolk," she added.
Referring to different provisions of Bangladesh Constitution Krisna Chand said the existing laws should be implemented property vis-a-vis creating awareness among women all over the country.
