Pro-AL candidate wins Magura poll

Awami League-backed candidate Abdul Gafur has won the Magura Pourasahva elections, according to unofficial results announced last night.

Gafur won the race bagging 13,947 votes while ruling four-party alliance candidate Khan Monwar Hossain secured the second position. He got 10,371 votes. Independent candiadte Iqbal Akther Khan Kafur got 10,324 votes to end third.

Our Magura correspondent reports returning officer of Magura municipal polls Shafiur Rahman annoucned the unofficial result at around 10:00pm.

With the result announced, Gafur's supporters come out in the streets to celebrate the victory.

Barring a few incidents of false voting, the polling was generally peaceful and voters turned up spontaneously at the polling centres. Form morning, they lined up and waited for hours together to cast their votes.

Voter turn-out was also high. A total of 35,174 voters out of 46,204 cast votes. Police and ansar personnel guarded polling stations while the para-military BDR moved in and around the town to maintain law and order.

Election officials, independent observers and political observers termed the election peaceful.
