Power cuts, mosquito menace hamper studies of RU students
Widespread power outages and mosquito bites are seriously hampering the studies of students in laboratories and dormitories of Rajshahi University.
Students said load shedding occurred five or six times a day in the university area. In all, the outages keep them without electricity for four to five hours every day, they added.
A group of teachers and students have recently met the vice-chancellor and demanded the university install power generators with its own fund but to no avail.
Resident students said the long-running problem of mosquitoes had become acuter since the last month, and the nuisance intensified at night.
Tonmoy Kumar Dey, a student of Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall, said it had been difficult for them to continue study with mosquitoes all around and frequent power blackouts. There are so many mosquitoes that even burning two anti-mosquito coils does not help, he said.
RU Pro-Vice Chancellor Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan said power shortage was a national problem. About the mosquito menace, he said they would ask Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) to take steps.
