Political party audit reports

Key information people should have

IN the past week, the Information Commission urged that the Election Commission (EC) should make audit reports of all registered political parties public through its website. These reports will provide transparency and accountability for the political parties and in any country where democracy is practiced it's essential that the public have this information.
However, in response to this, EC Secretary Dr Muhammed Sadique said, "This information is not ours. I think it would be better if the reports are collected from the political parties. We just keep these audit reports for our official purposes," which goes to show the tendency of shifting responsibilities and lingering the request for a later date. This doesn't reflect well on the EC or the political parties since not sharing information usually means disservice to the electorate or there are loopholes or in certain cases maybe good practices were not to followed.
As the elections are going to take place soon and we the general people of Bangladesh have gone through a very politically heated year with many downs and very few ups, it is only fair that we see how money is gotten and where it is being spent by the political parties and how this relates to the country's interest.
To gain trust and establish accountability it is important that the EC and the political parties share this information with us. We cannot just talk about "right to information" in big meetings and conferences if this is a practice that is only in spoken words.
