Police foil Shibir procession in capital
Police foiled a procession of Islami Chhatra Shibir activists in the city on Monday on the eve of a two-day countrywide hartal (shutdown) called by Jamaat-e-Islami.
Jamaat has called the hartal for Tuesday and Wednesday protesting a High Court verdict that declared illegal the party’s registration with the Election Commission.
Around 25 to 30 Shibir men brought out a procession in Moghbazar area around 11:30am Monday, said Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station.
They set fire to a banner they were carrying during the procession, the OC said.
On information, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the activists, he said.
Meanwhile, a policeman was injured as Shibir men hurled two homemade bombs targeting law enforcers on SS Road in Sirajganj town, reports our Pabna correspondent.
The activists hurled the cocktails when police tried to disperse their procession around 10:30am.
Panjab Ali, a constable of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station who was wounded by bomb splinters, was rushed to Sirajganj Police Line Hospital.
Police detained two Shibir men -- Azizur Rahman and Nazrul Islam -- from the spot.
