Twenty seven days into the discovery of Tanvir Mohammad Toki's body, no tangible progress has been made in the murder case, alleged speakers at a roundtable yesterday.
People are beginning to worry as the government and police seem indifferent to unearth the mystery, they said, demanding immediate arrest and trial of the murderers.
Santrash Nirmul Toki Mancha organised the roundtable, “Toki murder-political-social criminalisation and responsibility of the state: Context Narayanganj”, in the capital's Jatiya Press Club.
Toki, 17, son of Narayanganj Gonojagoron Mancha Convener Rafiur Rabbi, was found dead in the river Shitalakkhya in Narayanganj on March 8, two days after going missing.
Addressing the roundtable, Rabbi said a family controlling the Narayanganj mafia perpetrated past murders in Narayanganj. “Had the family been tried earlier, this murder would not have happened."
The persons he accused in a complaint with police are close to the government and are still issuing threats, he alleged.
The mancha Member Secretary Halim Azad said circumstances surrounding Toki's murder linked it to the past Narayanganj murders.
Police had mysteriously refrained from arresting the accused, said Narayanganj Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy, alleging that Shamim Osman's family, aided by a section of the administration, gave Narayanganj only “the politics of murder”.
