Lush green paddy fields cover what was once tobacco plantations in Remakri area by the Sangu river in Bandarban's Thanchi upazila. The small huts in the background that were used to store tobacco leaves will soon be filled with grain. Indigenous communities believe that as reliance on tobacco cultivation dwindles, the soil will slowly regain its fertility and they will be able to directly survive on their harvest throughout the year.
