Outlaw killed by rivals in Meherpur
A member of outlawed Janajuddho, a faction of Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-ML), was stabbed to death by his rivals in Gangni upazila of Meherpur district early Saturday.
The dead is Nizam Uddin, 50, of Kasba village in the upazila.
Criminals belonging to another outlawed party hacked Nizam to death around midnight while he was asleep in a hut on the bank of a beel (water body) in the village, said Masudul Alam, officer in-charge (OC) of Gangni police station.
Kawsar Ali, who had leased the water body, recently appointed Nizam as a guard upon receiving a threat that poison would be poured into the water body if he [Kawsar] failed to pay the outlaws Tk 2 lakh toll, the OC said.
Selim Uddin, younger brother of the victim, told journalists that Kawsar had appointed Nizam to deal with the extortionists.
Nizam, who was accused in several cases including two for murder, might have been killed by rival outlaws, added the police officer.
On information, police recovered the body, and sent it to Meherpur General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Selim filed a case with the police station in this connection.
