Opposition withdraws countrywide hartal
The 18-party opposition alliance has withdrawn its countrywide shutdown more than seven hours after a building collapsed in Savar on Wednesday.
At least 107 people were killed and over 600 injured in Savar on the outskirts of the capital when the nine-storied building collapsed.
The 18-party's 36-hour shutdown was scheduled to end at 6:00pm today.
The countrywide hartal has been withdrawn so that the relatives of the Savar building collapse victims can rush to the spot in search of their nearest and dearest ones and to help the rescue operation, said BNP chairperson's adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu.
He was talking to reporters at BNP headquarters at Nayapaltan in the capital around 3:15pm Wednesday.
Earlier, the 18-party withdrew its shutdown in Dhaka district and metropolitan area to help the rescue operation at a Savar builing which collapsed in the morning.
BNP leaders Brig Gen (retd) ASM Hannan Shah, Sadeque Hossain Khoka and Abdul Mannan already visited the spot where the building ‘Rana Plaza’ collapsed.
