Oishee alone killed parents, DB claims
This Star file photo shows Oishee, Sumi and Rony — arrested in connection with the killing of police inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and Swapna Rahman — are being taken to the court. Faces of the two girls have been blurred as they are minors.
Detectives said Saturday Oishee Rahman in her final statement to the investigators confessed that she had alone killed her parents, Special Branch Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Begum.
On August 16, the couple was found dead in their Chamelibagh residence in the capital.
Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said though she carried out the murder alone, she shared the matter with others.
She might have taken directions from others on how to execute the plan, the official said at a press briefing in the evening.
Before killing the couple at deep of night of August 14, he said, Oishee fed seven sedative tablets to her parents along with coffee.
About the motive behind the killing, the DB official said, Oishee mentioned the obstructions to her "freedom" by her parents.
He said the girl was desperate in her life adding that she awaited seven days to find a scope to carry out the murder.
Meanwhile, Metropolitan Magistrate Anwar Sadat in Dhaka sent 17-year-old Oishee and 10-year-old Khadiza Khatun Sumi, a domestic help of the murdered couple, to Gazipur Juvenile Correctional Centre, after recording their confessional statements on Saturday.
The order came amid media reports questioning the legality of their remand as they are still juveniles.
Oishee, Sumi and Rony were produced before the magistrate's court after completion of their five-day remand on Saturday.
Magistrate Anwar Sadat recorded the statements of Oishee for nearly three hours from 12:30pm. Later, he recorded the statements of Sumi.
Oishee confessed her involvement with the murder. The details of the statement could not be known immediately.
Meanwhile, another court placed Rahman Rony, a friend of Oishee, on a fresh five-day remand as Jewel Rana, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and also the investigation officer of the case, sought a 10-day remand for further investigation of the case.
Asaduzzaman Nur, a metropolitan magistrate, granted the remand for Rony.
Oishee turned herself into Paltan police on August 17, a day after the disclosure of the gruesome murder.
Police arrested Rony and Sumi on the same day.
On August 18, a Dhaka court granted five-day remand for Oishee, Rony and Sumi in connection with the killing.
As the Children Act 2013 suggests that anyone below the age of 18 will be considered as minor and cannot be taken on remand for interrogation, Oishee and Sumi had to undergo medical test to determine age.
Meanwhile, Oishee’s lawyer filed a petition with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court under the Rights to Information Act, seeking directives on police to stop giving out any kind of information about Oishee to the media.
