University student 'commits suicide'

A university student allegedly committed suicide at her residence in Chittagong city's Foys Lake area yesterday.
Nihar Nigar Nova, 20, was a first year medical student of University of Science and Technology, Chittagong.
Quoting the family members, Khulshi Sub-inspector Zahidur Rahman said Nova hanged herself from the ceiling of her room.
Police did not sent the body to morgue as Nova's family members took it after getting a written permission from an additional magistrate, Zahid added.
Pro-AL nominees for graduates' reps to DU senate picked

Gonotantrik Okya Parishad, a pro-Awami League body, yesterday announced names of the candidates who will be contesting for the 25 posts of registered graduates' representatives to the Dhaka University senate.
A total of 25 candidates from the organisation will contest in the election, said a press release.
Leaders of Gonotantrik Okkiya Parishad made the announcement in the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).
The polls will take place in 43 centres outside Dhaka on September 14 and 21 and in Dhaka on September 18.
Executive engineer of Mongla Port Authority arrested in dowry case

Police arrested Swokot Ali, executive engineer of the Mongla Port Authority, on Monday night in his Mirzapur resident of Khulna city in a dowry case.
Salma Akter, wife of the arrestee, filed the case with a Khulna court on Sunday, said police. In the case, Salma alleged that her husband tortured her regularly for a dowry of Tk 5,00,000. Salma has recently moved to her parents' house with their two children.
Boatman dies crushed between two launches in capital

A boatman died as his boat was crushed between two launches in the Buriganga river near Sadar Ghat area yesterday afternoon.
The deceased was Monir Hossain, 29, of Khejur Bagh in South Keraniganj. Witness said other boatmen pulled out Monir from the river and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Two arrested with Yaba pills in Ctg

Rapid Action Battalion held two persons with 2,000 Yaba pills worth about Tk 4.4 lakh from a restaurant in Chittagong city yesterday.
Md Sofiul Alam, 50, of Fatikchhari upazila, and Md Helal, 30, of Bhola, were caught red-handed while they were dealing the drug at Hotel Zaman at Muradpur intersection, said Rab officials. The duo were handed over to Panchlaish police and a case was filed in this regard.
KCC ward councillor held for extortion

Md Kabir Hossain Kobu, councillor of ward-16 of Khulna City Corporation, was arrested by the Detective Branch of Khulna Metropolitan Police over extortion charges on Monday night.
Kabu, also adviser to BNP ward no-16 unit, will be produced before a Khulna court after primary interrogation at DB office, said Daulatpur police.
Kabu is an accused in several extortion and violence cases with two police stations, police added.
3 AL activists injured in bomb attack

Three Awami League activists were injured in a bomb attack at Boyra Bazar in Sonadanga of Khulna city on Monday night.
Kazi Mozibul Haque, ex-general secretary of AL ward-16, and activists Khandakar Bahauddin and Ashrafuzzamn Khokon, were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Police said some miscreants hurled three bombs at them when they were chatting at a shop.
Their rivals might have attacked them over business feuds, said Sonadanga police. A case was filed yesterday.
Road crashes kill four

Four people were killed and 25 others injured in road accidents in the country yesterday and Monday.
CU Correspondent reports, three people died after a bus rammed their rickshaw at Fakir Hat of Sitakunda upazila Monday night.
The dead are rickshaw-puller Abdul Halim, 30, MD Jasim Uddin, 28, and Rahim Chowdhury Kamal, 28.
Our Jhenidah correspondent adds, Milon Kumar Biswas, 30, died after a truck hit his bicycle near Porahati in Sadar upazila yesterday.
Our Patuakhali correspondent reports, 25 passengers were injured as a bus of Sugondha Paribahan fell into a roadside ditch at Rojopara in Kalapara yesterday.
