2 weekly holidays at DU from July

The Dhaka University authorities will observe two weekly holidays from July.
The authorities have added Saturday to the weekly holiday list during a syndicate meeting at the registrar building on Saturday. The university has been observing Friday as the only weekly holiday.
According to the new rules, all activities of the university would continue on every Thursday from 9:30am to 5:00pm.
The summer vacation will be shortened by a week form the next year.
5 lower court judges transferred

The government has brought some changes in the judiciary through the transfer of five district and sessions judges and 13 other judicial officials.
The changes have been made in consultation with the Supreme Court and a gazette notification has been issued in this regard, said a law ministry press note on Monday.
Khaleda returns from Singapore

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia returned home on Monday night, after her weeklong tour in Singapore for treatment.
Khaleda, also the leader of the opposition in parliament, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 10:40pm.
Senior BNP leaders, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Moudud Ahmed and MK Anwar, received her at the airport.
The former premier went to Singapore for treatment on June 16.
Illegally felled timber, trawler seized

Bangladesh Coast Guard (West Zone) yesterday seized illegally felled Sundori timbers weighting 200 CFT and a trawler worth about Tk 32 lakh from Rupsha upazila in Khulna.
On information, the Coast Guard personnel seized the timber and trawler from Batiaghata area at the bank of the Rupsha river when the gang that sells timber at sawmills managed to escape.
The timber and the trawler were handed over to Khulna Divisional Forest Office.
DoE fines 2 N'ganj factories Tk 50 lakh

The Department of Environment (DoE) on Monday fined two factories Tk 50 lakh in Adamzee EPZ area in Siddhirganj of Narayanganj for discharging toxic wastes.
Mohammad Alamgir, a DoE director, summoned the owners of Yeasma Knitting and Dyeing Ltd and Tex Zipper Ltd to the headquarters of DoE, says a press release.
After a hearing, the director fined Yeasma Knitting and Dyeing Tk 40 lakh and Tex Zipper Tk 10 lakh.
Marine academy celebrates golden jubilee

Bangladesh Marine Academy celebrated its golden jubilee in Chittagong yesterday.
On the occasion, the academy organised a programme on its campus at Anwara upazila in the district.
Koji Sekimiju, secretary general of International Maritime Organization, addressed the function as chief guest while Syed Manjurul Islam, secretary of Ministry of Shipping, was present as the guest of honour.
Dr Sajid Hussain, commandant of the academy; and Capt Moin Ahmed, member state audit officer of IMO; also spoke.
Sylhet BNP leader found dead

A BNP leader was found dead at Shahjahan Hotel in Sylhet city's Zindabazar early Monday.
Zamshed Hossain Chowdhury, 65, of Sunamganj, was the vice-president of BNP's ward-2 unit of Sylhet city.
Being informed by the hotel authorities, Sylhet Kotwali police broke open the door of his room-203, where he had been staying for three years, and found the body lying in the bathroom.
Police sent the body, which bore no injury mark, to MAG Osmani Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
Two housewives 'commit suicide'

Two housewives allegedly committed suicide by drinking poison in different areas of the capital's Pallabi yesterday.
In Mirpur-11, Nasima Begum, 45, swallowed Savlon antiseptic liquid at her residence. Her family said she had been depressed after being diagnosed with cancer.
In Mirpur-6, Modina Begum, 50, drank toilet cleaner Harpic at her residence. The reason behind her suicide could not be known immediately.
Pallabi police are investigating the incidents.
Foreign secretary leaves for Beijing

Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque left for Beijing yesterday for a five-day visit to China.
During the visit, he will meet Chinese leaders and officials for enhancing bilateral cooperation in different areas, including trade and investment.
He is leading an inter-ministerial delegation, consisting of senior officials of ministries of finance, communications, commerce, board of investment, prime minister's office, armed forces division.
