Woman, daughter die as train runs them over

A woman and her daughter died as a train ran them over in Joydebpur yesterday.
The dead are Saima Begum, 26, an Islamic history student of Guru Doyal University College, and her eight-year-old daughter, Maisha Akhter.
The duo was crossing the rail tracks when a train, Silk City Express, ran them over, said Dhaka railway police.
Body recovered from Buriganga

Police recovered the body of a boy from Buriganga river in Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital yesterday.
The victim was identified as Biplob, 18, of Sujanagar upazila in Pabna.
Quoting family members, Keraniganj police said Biplob came to Dhaka on January 1, in search of a job.
His family members could not reach him over cellphone in last four days, they said.
Woman arrested with firearm in Ctg

Police arrested a woman with a firearm and some Yaba tablets from Mohammadnagar area in Chittagong city early yesterday.
The arrestee is Nasima Akter, 38.
Bayezid police said they arrested Nasima after conducting a drive at her house at Santingar Shanty around 2.00am. A light gun (LG), a bullet and 20 pieces of contraband Yaba tablets were recovered from the house.
Nasima admitted to her involvement in selling of Yaba tablets, they said. A case was filed with the police station.
DU public administration dept anniversary events begin tomorrow

A two-day programme of public administration department at Dhaka University will begin at Teacher-Student Centre on the campus tomorrow to celebrate the department's 40th founding anniversary.
The programmes include colourful procession, seminar, and cultural events, said a press release.
Current and former students will participate in the programme. DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique will be present as the chief guest at the event.

Prof Amin U Sarkar joined North South University as vice-chancellor on Tuesday.
He received a masters degree in Economics in 1983 and a PhD in Research Economics in 1988 from the University of California.
Prof Sarkar's had earlier served as the dean of the Alabama A&M University's College of Business and Public Affairs and also the chairman of the Georgia College & State University's Department of Economics.
