NBR registers 21pc rise in July receipts
The revenue authority posted 21 percent growth year-on-year in July, thanks to high collections of VAT and income tax.
Total receipts in the first month of fiscal 2013-14 rose to Tk 7,771 crore from Tk 6,431 crore in the same month a year ago, according to National Board of Revenue.
VAT collections in July stood at Tk 2,790 crore, a 33 percent rise year-on-year, which an NBR official credited to strict monitoring.
"We maintained strict surveillance over the main sectors of VAT," he said, adding that special attention was given to cigarette, the chief source of VAT.
“Monitoring also supported income tax receipts to grow faster,” Md Bashir Uddin Ahmed, member of tax administration and human resource management of NBR, told The Daily Star earlier.
Around Tk 1,837 crore of income tax was collected in July, up 28.1 percent from a year ago, but still short of the monthly target.
Customs collection, too, rose last month, by 7.68 percent year-on-year to Tk 2,989 crore, according to NBR
The tax administration aims to collect Tk 136,090 crore in fiscal 2013-14, 25 percent more than the previous fiscal year's receipts.
