Musharraf arrested in Benazir murder case

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) yesterday formally arrested Pervez Musharraf in the Benazir Bhutto murder case.
Musharraf will remain at his Chak Shahzad farmhouse residence but will be produced at the anti-terrorist court in Rawalpindi on Friday.
Since his return to Pakistan in a bid to contest the 2013 general election, the former army strongman has been embroiled in a number of cases against him, ranging from judges' detention to Benazir's assassination to treason against the state.
Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack outside Rawalpindi's Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007 while Musharraf was president. She was killed after addressing an election campaign rally in the city.
Musharraf was indicted in the case in February 2011, and in August the same year he was declared a proclaimed offender and his property was attached because of his absence.
The FIA prosecutors told the court that Musharraf is allegedly involved in the assassination of Bhutto because of his failure to provide her adequate security.
Musharraf, despite being aware of the imminent danger to Bhutto's life, did not take the requisite security measures to prevent her assassination, according to a 57-page investigation report submitted earlier before the court.
